Latest News  >  McLay Boats build jet powered 6.40m Seaboat

One of New Zealand's largest and most respected boat builders McLay Boats has just completed a 6.40 hardtop seaboat with a Scott 8.5 inch two stage, salt water jet and a GM 6.0l engine. Steve McLay has personally supervised the design, construction and testing of McLay's first jet powered boat and sent us these photos.

The new boat is going through McLay Boats' rigorous testing programme and we have been working closely with them to optimise the boat's handling and performance.

Steve has already taken the boat on one sea fishing trip - across the Taieri bar and was very impressed with how it handled a 1.5 metre swell. He said it was great not to have to worry looking for the channel crossing the bar and being able to just "go for it". He noted that it had very rapid acceleration and planes on its own length - far quicker than traditional outboards, and was able to carry heavier loads, and surprisingly had the same fuel economy as a large 4 stroke outboard.

We are delighted that a company with McLay Boats' pedigree and reputation for quality is the first company to incorporate a Scott waterjet in a production sea boat.
