We design our boats using every bit of the expertise we have built up in the last three decades – building market leading jet propulsion equipment and boats. We've also been lucky enough to spend thousands of hours boating in NZ and overseas rivers and lakes, and have listened carefully to feedback from jet boat enthusiasts around the world. Our jets are also "competition hardened" as World Jet Sprint champions for the past 13 years. We believe Scott Boats set the standard for recreational boats in construction, quality, performance and most importantly safety.

Scott Boats in 2010
Last year, despite the tough financial conditions, was our busiest year for producing boats. While the overall market in New Zealand was very weak, we were at capacity all year.

2010 was exciting as we launched several new designs, including some new jet models. We continued to customise our standard designs to meet each customer's need – and enjoyed building boats that exceeded our customers' expectations. We know every boat we build is a perfect combination of hull, jet and engine. Even the impellers will be customised to suit each boat.

We like it when customers ask for our advice on all sorts of things when it comes to their boats. Jet boating is our life and we reckon we've done most things our customers will want to do in their boats; fishing, hunting, adventure boating, family boating, etc.

As always our boats represent our latest technology in hull design, engines and jets (staying no 1 in jet sprinting globally means we have a constant stream of upgrades and product improvements).

The boat everyone wants to talk about because it is so different is our Scud. Here are details on three "Scuds" from 2010.

4.3 metre river boat, 3.6 litre Holden, 812 two stage jet with trim nozzle

This boat has been designed for shallow water boating, slow planing, and very easy access. Richard is a keen fisherman - and also wanted a boat that would work for his 80 year old dad.

When Richard saw the Scud he instantly thought it would be the "bee's knees" for fishing and hunting. Richard has had jet boats for 25 years, and is an experienced boater. His thoughts on the Scud were; "extremely responsive, incredible for slow boating, you get more time to think about where you are going, just makes boating more relaxed, more time to make decisions. In my old boat - I just had to go for it. Kon and John were very easy to deal with, nothing was a bother."

"It really makes boating easy. It is a piece of cake to pick someone up or drop-off, and the safety of it with walkthrough and easy of access over bow is amazing."

"The trim nozzle fully down allows a slow, gentle take-off. We had 100% success rate getting 5 kids up on skis, that had never been waterskiing before."

4.55 metre river boat, 350chev, 825 two stage jet with trim nozzle, 14 degree hull

This boat is built around the customer - Tim Walton's existing engine. The 8 1/4 inch jet is perfect for the 350 chev engine - affordable and it can utilise every horsepower of the engine (the engine and jet combination is halfway between the Lexus V8 and Chev LS2 6 litre power-wise).

Tim came in to Winchester wanting to buy a conventional boat, but tried the Scud and bought one on the spot.

His thoughts on the boat were; "Love it, absolutely. The most practical jet boat I've ever had (I've had 4), so easy. I think this thing will go anywhere. And its easy - you pull up to a bank and just walk off."

"It's easy to trailer and the extra storage up front is great - covered up and locked in. So easy to work with."

"I enjoyed working with Konrad - he thinks outside the square and listens to clients, and nothing is a problem. We tapered the back in, and also have a reverse bow. We were up a creek on the West Coast that was so tight we couldn't turn around - but we just backed up - no other boat could have done that. The trim nozzle is really quick - love it."

"I'm really rapt with the open bow - first time out it looks a bit different and you worry about getting a wave across the bow, but by the second day - walk in, just so easy. The 14 degree hull is great - I wouldn't go back to a 16 - I can use the trim to run like a 16."

The photos from Tim show the versatility of the Scud. There are some great shots of the Hollyford Track.

5.1 metre inshore boat, 6.0 litre Chev, 852 two stage jet with trim nozzle

This boat is fun - custom designed for the relatively calm waterways around Sweden. Our customer spent an afternoon with us on the Rangitata River in South Canterbury, and knew he needed a boat that could perform at home in Sweden. It fitted perfectly in a 20 foot container and we are looking forward to photos of the boat n operation - once the ice clears!

The two photos show it being put into the lake for testing.

MODEL: River Boat
4.55 metre river boat, 3.5 litre Nissan V6, 812 two stage jet with trim nozzle, Hydraulic Reverse, 14 degree hull with open bow

This boat was a custom build for a keen hunter/fisherman who wanted the versatility of the Scud while retaining the sharp look or our regular boats. It is built around our 14 deg design but features a variable deadrise in the bow entry for better ride quality in rough conditions. It features a full open bow with a removable white water cover for extreme conditions, the walk through from the cockpit has a hinged folding door which can be latched in the open or closed position depending on the use, this allows excellent access in and out of the boat. The back of the boat features a swim platform with reverse bows this not only offers a excellent fishing/swimming and boarding platform but greatly improves the reverse performance of the boat, by comparism jet boats with traditional backs would have 20% less maneuverability and performance in reverse, it also aids when reversing in shallow water as the back of the boat tends to lift rather than suck down as it would in a conventional boat. The sides were made 50mm higher than std (which is an option) for extra freeboard as this boat will see some offshore sea use. The Cockpit is exceptional roomy and well laid out with all of the controls at your fingertips, the seating is set up for 4-5.

Power is from a Nissan all alloy 3.5L V6 pumping out just under 300hp in a very light compact package. The characteristics of this engine are perfectly matched to the 812 two stage jet which features hydraulic trim control and hydraulic reverse control, it is also fitted with our heavy duty intake grill (option on the jet) featuring bissaloy 400 bars and high tensile cast AB2 ends - these grills are unbelievably tough and are essential for vigorous users. All around handling and performance are exceptional while retaining excellent fuel economy.

Scott Boats with the GM 6.0 litre LS engine range, 852 two stage jet and trim nozzle package

The high revving (up to 6,000rpm), high output, all alloy Chev engine is perfectly suited to the high revving 852 jet. The impellers on the jet match the revving of the engine right up to 6,000rpm - delivering massive, controlled thrust. Only jet sprint boats have better power to weight ratios! Quite simply the best boats in the world for adventure boating.

'Hammer Down' 4.45 metre river boat with the L98 6.0 litre engine
This is a recreational fishing and family fun boat owned by Brent Patterson. It has a 14 degree shallow V and a built-in fish bin. The layout is designed to be suitable for fitting in the kids, and skiing and biscuiting. The hull is slightly stretched to make the bottom as wide as possible - allowing it to plane at really low speed.

When Brent was looking for a new boat he chose Scott because "he wanted to get the best. I bought a second-hand Scott boat a few years ago and it was great. The new boat is everything I wanted - the trim nozzle is real good."

When asked how it compared with other boats Brent had a few comments;
• "it is like driving a Ferrari compared to anything else"
• "other boats struggled with 4 people... this just kills it"
• "the fuel economy is amazing - it only uses 30 litres for a day's fishing on the Rangitata"

Brent worked closely with Scott Waterjet to customise 'Hammer Down' including a different dash layout, modified trailer, etc. He said Kon, Hamish and John were very good to work with.

A few photos of 'Hammer Down' on a "shakedown run" on the Rangitata with Brent and Konrad. Brent is looking forward to taking 'Hammer Down' to the Hollyford in October. We hope he sends a few photos.

MODEL: Puddle Hopper
3.1 metre puddle hopper, 2.0L GT Subaru turbo, 751 single stage jet with trim nozzle, 16 degree hull, 3 seater

This boat is one of our earlier Puddle Hoppers and was designed and built to explore anything that contains water. The current owners are the Coulters from Geraldine - Gavin, Sam and Henry. They are keen jetboaters, hunters and fishermen. Pictured is Sam driving with two mates on board in deer recovery mode. This boat is small, nimble and liightweight making it the ideal tool for shallow water boating and exploring those waterways that are too small for regular boats. It seats 3 in comfort and has excellent performance from the 200+ HP Subaru coupled to the 751 jet, much like a go-cart on water.

MODEL: Puddle Hopper
3.4 metre puddle hopper, 2.0L GT Subaru turbo, 752 two stage jet with trim nozzle, 16 degree hull, 3 seater

Puddle Hopper 3.4m is a updated model from the 3.1 and offers several advantages including a wider beam for slower planing, higher sides for better freeboard and slightly longer overall length for better ride comfort. These boats are a hoot to drive and the extra push from the two stage jet and the 2.0L turbo engine (which has the boost set higher to produce 240 hp) gives eye-watering performance and handling. The cockpit is roomy and allows for great access in and out as well as an excellent seating position. These boats are used for a wide range of activities - adventure boating, fishing and hunting, water skiing etc.

Jet Sprint Hull for World Champion Slade Stanley

Building a competitive hull for a jet sprint super boat is perhaps the biggest challenge for jet boat builders. The hull is absolutely critical to a winning jet sprint package.

Scott has a long tradition of building winning hulls - including Konrad's two world championship boats.

When asked why he had chosen Scott for his new hull Slade said "Scott build the best jet unit and with Konrad's knowledge and skill they should be able to build the best boat."

The hull has been delivered and a 427 cubic inch twin turbo is being installed, along with the 8 3/4 inch Scott Waterjet sprint unit. The engine will probably run about 1200hp, but is capable of a lot more.

Slade commented that the "hull looks a treat and the workmanship is great."

The boat "Hazardous" will be complete in about a month but here are a few work-in-progress photos. We look forward to following Slade's progress in Australian Superboats this season, and wish him and his team all the best.

MODEL: River Boat
4.45 metre walk-through windscreen, 350 chev, 825 two stage jet with trim nozzle, hydraulic reverse 14 degree, swim platform reverse bows

This boat was built for Merv and Dave McCabe (father & son) of Oamaru, NZ and has a lot of features for their particular use. Dave has a young wife and family and wanted easy access in and out of the boat for his wife and kids, he also wanted a secure dry storage area for stowing gear so that it was not lying in the cockpit. Merv is not as nimble as he used to be and wanted easy access and a comfortable roomy cockpit, they also wanted to retain maximum performance and handling.

We designed and built this boat with a lot of input from the owners to achieve their goals. We built this boat with a windscreen that has an opening centre section to allow for easy access in and out of the boat, the centre section opens on a gas strut which holds the door in the open or closed position. To complement the opening we built an alloy checker plate step for easy access through the nose, the built-in checkerplate step is hinged to the floor and swings back into the cockpit which allows easy access into the nose, which is set up with an internal floor and bulkhead providing an excellent dry/secure storage area which is easily accessible both from in the boat or on the shore.

The sides are 50mm higher than std (available as an option) to give more freeboard and side height for better safety for the kids as well as providing more room and a seating position that is easier to get in and out of. Merv, Dave and family have now used this boat for some time and are extremely happy with the end result, not only do they have a boat that ticks all the boxes for their use... it looks and performs like all Scott Boats - extremely well. We were so pleased with this boat we are now building one as a demonstrator.
